Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
Hello all,
Just asking about this.
Basically engine stalled/went dead while I was driving at 80km/h.
Aircon(or at least the fans blowing through the inlets) and stereo were still running after it happened.
Noticed it when car seems to shudder, revs went to zero, accelerator felt dead, car dash had no lights, and I think my left blinker was not working, when I tried to signal, while pulling into the service lane.
Had been on the road for about 10mins, when this happened.
After coming to a stop, I was able to startup the car again, and there were no more issues after this. Drove another 40mins without issues.
I do have a dodgy immombiliser, which needs to be tapped ocassionally, to allow me to start up the car.
Any ideas, fellow FTO owners?
Car is stock auto 95 gpx.
Cheers

If the immobilizer is dodgy,id put that at the top of the list.

Re: Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
Given the car will run on either alternator or battery for some time if one of them goes, I wouldnt have thought this would be the problem. If alternator went briefly, car would run on battery until it came back or battery flat (and given car restarted, battery not flat). If battery died, alternator would keep car going until turned off and then wouldnt restart. They would have to both go at the same time for the car to just shut down and that is unlikely.loose or dodgy...

If I am missing something, happy to be corrected....

Re: Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
My old falcon broke it's accessory belt while doing 110km on the freeway and the engine shut down, engine light came on, power steer went and I was in the right lane in heavy traffic, heaps of cars behind me.. It was very difficult to get over to the breakdown lane.
So I was just suggesting it might be worth a look at and it would be the next place to look after the immobiliser.

Re: Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
Craig lost the same belt in his blue FTO just out of Canberra on the way back from Melbourne. He nearly got back to my place before the battery died and I needed to rescue him. Admittedly some of that distance they used a sock instead of a belt, but was surprised they managed to get as far as they did. Only reason they realised the belt had snapped was that the alternator warning light came on - car didnt cut out (ended up being a buggered bearing caused it to shred). Its funny the falcon had a complete meltdown. Wouldnt have guessed it would have behaved like that.
By all means check them, but my money is on the immobilizer. There will be a dodgy connection in there somewhere.

I'm only near perfect.

Thank you for the replies guys.
Guess I will get my immobiliser changed asap.
It happened again, and this time while at a red light. after dinner.
Managed to recover in time, after some quick taps at the immobiliser.
I had to tap it a few more times, in order to start the car, after I stop for fuel as well, just now.

That happened to me once, travelling on the freeway and the car just turned off, all dash lights went off, everything like someone cut the ignition then cut the battery cables!
Put hazards on which they came on, started the car and it started straight away. Car was juddering and stalling, check engine light was on, had three codes from memory was:
Air intake sensor
Air flow meter
Intake manifold actuator

Re: Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
The fact you can tap the immobilizer to fix pretty much guarantees that is the culprit.

Good price! Installing an alarm under the steering column is fucked!

Have you had any more problems since you got the immobiliser removed?

Re: Engine stalled while driving, on an auto gpx
Have not really driven too much, since getting it replaced.
Will update here, if I still have issues with engine stalls.
