allow me to fan the fire more, when i asked my mechanic to adjust my tapets (gpx) and he told me they were hydrolic. i went straight to another mechanic.

ok, so where can I find the procedure and the clearances for the tappets in the manuals? (workshop/techical etc) Can someone please point me to some text in the manuals that specifies the differences (GR/GPX)

I know you all keep saying that don't take it to mechanics that are not sure, that's not exactly fair on the mechanic, someone could of worked on F1 engines for example, and never adjusted FTO tappets. Does that mean I can't take it to him?

Mechanics can't be expected to know everything however they are expected to be logical about things... fine even if he did think they were hydrolic, it doesn't mean he is an idiot...

Not all mechanics are bad, some of you that live in big cities have to realise that in small towns there isn't much choice, I would rather prefer a decent mechanic that has never done it to do it, rather then me myself trying to do it.

Maybe instead of saying go to another mechanic, you guys should say be cautious, or be carefull...

Boris, it's got little to do with being "fair" on the mechanic and everything to do with trying to save you money, time and hassles.

If you're willing to pay for the mechanic to learn on the job then that's your choice. Personally I think it makes far more sense to take it to someone who is familiar with FTOs and who has done it before as there will be less chance of any issues popping up and it will also be cheaper as they'll be able to do it in a shorter time period as they know what they are doing and are not learning as they go along. :wink:

Boris makes a very good point - a good mechanic is a good mechanic. They will work things out very quickly, and it is not always possible to take it to someone who has done things like tappets on a GPX before.

The problem in this case is that they have to have the right tools to do the job properly. That is why you should choose carefully who is doing it, or at least be prepared for it to take a bit longer than would otherwise be the case.

I would communicate very clearly what is involved and show them the manual before giving the go-ahead. Also ensure that you are not going to pay some rediculous amount of hours for him to trial and error his way through it.

The workshop manuals you can get are for the MIVEC engine and don't cover the GR. The tappet adjustment is in Workshop Manual Part 1, pages 11A-8 and 11A-9

true the mechanic can't be expected to know everything, but im sure you've heard the saying "you can't teach a old dog new tricks" if he out right claims that they are hydrolic without looking into it or thinking about it, i wouldnt put the chances of him putting the effort to learn about it.

heres another example, when i had my previous car MR2 GT, i was fitting in a boost guage, and i needed some hose fitting, my friend recommended this V8 performance place near northcote (its somewhere there) and i asked for the hose fitting, i asked if he had anyother hose clams etc. he told me its a vacum and wont fall off.


the point of the story is, he's a really nice guy, but it just wasnt in his knowledge base.

anyway, im just rambling. :)

but if you find a mechanic who is wiling to learn, then your onto a good thing..:) wish all mechanics would be like that.
