Could just get gas struts and tell the copper that its only wrapped and the reason it feels so light is the struts?

What will you say when they decide to knock on it?
You also need to make sure the struts aren't too strong or you can snap the bonnet when trying to close it.

Struts would be weak, wouldnt need to be strong on a lighter bonnet.
