(I Don’t think many would argue with that)
actually there would probably be a few rally drivers that would argue
I had a conversation with malcom crockenberg who works on a lot of mitsi rally cars and he told me that a he knew a few guys that had used non genuine timing belts and they had let go and done considerable damage to there engines.
He recommends you only use genuine parts.
there is a lot of work involved in changing a timing belt, it is not like a fan belt
I think i might stick with the original Mitsubishi one, even though these cheap ones could be just as good. I think it's slightly silly IMHO to be looking for the cheapest, if there is even a very small probability of it failing more then the origina. Also if it does your looking major surgery.
Sometimes spending $100 more could save you 3k in the proccess.

gates are not a cheap sh*tty manufacturer. They are a supplier of OEM parts to the car manufacturers... it's just lucky that the FTO has the same timing belt (length and teath) as another car out there on the market (pretty sure its not a Mitsu).
don't have the part number sorry.

generally i agree with this and say it often... however in this case i know the manufacturer (by reputation) well enough to say don't worry about it.
at the same time if your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing and puts in on wrong your up for 3grand anyways
