Pencil is a a very general term.

Grey lead implies that it's a grey pencil.

A bit like;

A) Can I borrow your Mitsubishi.
B) Can I borrow your FTO.

If you owned mulitple Mitsubishis this would clear up any confusion as into which car the other party was looking to borrow.
