Hey Guys

I took my car over pits recently to get it licensed but i had some problems and i don't know to much about cars so if you could tell me what i can fix/check myself and how and what i should just take a to a professional to do?

- I have fixed all the lighting/lamp problems and found the engine number.
- Oil is leaking from bolts from the bottom gasket? and from the oil filter
- not sure what wrong with the horn the fuse is not the problem
- Steering Boot best taken to professional and done?
- Second Vin Number is located under this

is there step to take that off carefully? and maybe just go over pits without the brace/strut bar and chuck it back on after it been licensed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Steve,
Your problems don't sound bad at all but depends what the cause of the oil leaks are.
Your vin/chassis number should be on the bulkhead behing the engine.
Oil filter leaking - drain the oil from the sump, remove filter and put a new one on (engine takes 4.5ltrs including filter)

You really don't have that much, it's a shame they didn't quickly point out the bits to you.

I'll jack up the car later today and change the oil filter and check if there anything wrong with the horns, yeah there a vin number on my bulk head but they want to see the one under my struts as well (second picture) which I think it pretty stupid cause the other one is in plain clear sight

The inspector was kinda a dickhead at the same time, asking me why I bought a fto and calling it sh*t which was really uncalled for.

But yeah I am glad they only pointed out only a few of these minor problems and didn't catch the others

Steering rack boot is annoying. Majority of FTOs have torn rubber boot on the steering rack shaft. Cheap to fix the boot but not sure whether the whole shaft has to come out of the car to fix.

One of the guys here should be able to tell you.

I did my steering rack boots last week. Took me 30 mins each side.

This is what I did.

I used these boots: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal-St ... 415dccf275 and didn't have to remove the outer tie rod ends.

What you do is cut the larger end of the new boot to the same size as that of the original. The small end does not require cutting.

Take the plastic sleeve they come in and place it over the tie rod.

Lube up the entire sleeve and the inside of the boot.

With some force slide the boot over the tie rod.

If you do remove the outer tie rod end then you may have to get a wheel alignment as the tracking may be out.

Ahhh Vectose wish you were in WA!

looks pretty complicated to me hahaha hopefully i am able to do it other then that most of my other problems has been fixed.

It just the horn is no where to be found and not sure what to do about that.
hopefully i can figure out the steering rack boot fix

More Problems :(

I decided to change my steering wheel following this guide

it was all good then find out my the horn contact plate on my "FTO" boss kit is to small compared to the old stock one so it doesn't touch that metal stick behind it so i threw back on my stocks for the time being :(
is there any work arounds for this?

and another problem this one more important in regarding to passing PITS.



Back taillight inside RH side (as circled in video) doesn't stay on unless i apply the break
all the other one work fine though

does anyone know what might be the problem?


*EDIT* My bad.... forgot brake lights have 2 wires in them..... does anyone know what the replacement bulbs are?

Direct replacement steering rack boots can be had from Repco for under 10 bucks. I can't see a mechanic charging more than half hour labor to change boot.

I have not had one oil leak on my car and it's done over 200000kms. Stick to the 10w40 I reckon.

Okay here what has happened i ordered new fto steering rack boots but before i could even get to installing new ones

i cannot get the the track rod end off it stuck on there like crazy! sat there for about 2 hours trying to get it off but no luck at all

probably gonna take it to the workshop and get the new boots put in

If you look at the guide I linked to it tells you to hit the housing with two hammers at the same time at an angle. You need to hit it as hard as you can and it can take multiple hits.

Don't hit the thread on the bottom though as this can damage it and you will need to buy a new outer track rod end.

Oh my bad not that part, that was pretty easy put the park after that screwing off the end cap

Leave the tie rod end in, undo the nut adjacent to the tie rod end and turn the tie rod counter clockwise until the thread comes out. This will disconnect the tie rod for you to install a new boot. Or go get a tie rod remover from super cheap auto. They are only 20 bucks.
