the grinding noise gets faster as i accelerate, and only happens on any form of acceleration. On idle, i can hear the rattle, but when i put my foot on the clutch, it quietens, and when i release, it goes back.
On the outside, it sounds like someone jammed up a whole deck of cards on a bycicle tyre to make that rattle noise that goes faster you accelerate.
Is this a colossal fix? What do you think?

I love these sounds like threads, always fun guessing.
I'm still guessing what my sound is.
Given you have a clutch, and from what you've described, I'd agree with your thought of thrust bearing.
And I'd be next to positive that's a gearbox drop job.
How long ago was the gbox oil replaced? the sound at idle could be clutch rollover (input shaft spinning freely in the gearbox), but given it's still there when you're accelerating makes me think otherwise. A thrust bearing will normally make more of a squeaking noise than a grinding, unless it's really fucked. But even then it should be grinding its way around.
Possibly a loose bearing in the g'box. either way, sounds like you'll need to drop it out.

Damnit!
Fraz, when i had my car at the exhaust shop long ago to have my exhaust done, i just thought i'd ask the guy what the squeaking was, and he said it was "just the thrust bearing, no big deal" and he pressed that thing that looked like a lever on the gbox and it sort of disappeared. Looks like now it has gone worse...
Also I just learned that when sitting on the lights on a manual for longer than a few seconds, it is best to put it in neutral+clutch out, instead of first gear+clutch in.. If i knew, I probably wouldn't be in this position!! f*** me!!

The thrust or 'push out' bearing is the one that depresses the clutch diaphragm, yes it's on the primary shaft, but its not the one I'm reffering too. The one I'm talking about is the main support bearing on the primary shaft, inside the box.
