Difference Between GR Tip and GPX Tip

Post by Nacho »

Ok after a bit of time searching on the forum still can't find the answer I'm looking for.

I've read that the GR tip transmission and GPX tip transmission are different (eg. can't bolt GR tip tranny onto GPX engine) but what I'm trying to find out is the mechanical reason why? (Eg. Size? Number of teeth? etc.)

Need info to try and troubleshoot a serious noise problem coming out of the tip tranny. In this scenario there is a GR tip tranny bolted onto a GPX engine.

Thoughts?

Horrible question, but what kind of noise?
When does it occur, etc.

The only internal differences would be the diff ratio... and that wont cause a noise unless something's seriously f*cked.

They'll both bolt to either engine, its the same bell housing & block.

I'd say you've busted something... torque converter / tranny headers / bearings etc

Got fluid in it?

Thanks for the info matey!

Ummm.....this is that annoying noise I've been trying to figure out for the past 3 years and now it's getting beyond the joke.

Noise description: Take a tin instant coffee can/container, get a fork/spoon and hit the side of the can firmly at about 4 strikes per second ongoing. Now picture standing about 30m away from that noise and can still hear it clearly.....annoying right

When it occurs: Noise seems to be related someone to the tranny oil temperate. On cold start will take about 5 minutes before the noise starts and eventually the noise goes away after about 20-30 mins of driving and regularly changing gears which I'm guessing heats up the tranny oil temperature. The noise used to only happen when the car was in gear (D or R) AND STATIONARY so I was able to suppress the noise for a long time by simply shifting to N when coming to a complete stop but now the noise is happening also when in neutral. Only way to keep the noise away when sitting stationary is to basically put the car in neutral and rev it up to about 1000rpm. Also (only when that noise period is happening) the sound happens when you're gearing down........but not while gearing up. During this time the shifts are also a bit jolty (not super jolty like when the torque converter's about to blow) but eventually smooths out to very very smooth when the oil warms up over time.

That's pretty much all I've got. I've taken it to a couple of mechanics who listened and didn't bother taking the tranny apart coz they simply said NFI lol

Sure it's your transmission? Tape it and post it.

Could be a pulley and maybe a drive shaft.
