I will be having a go at replacing my starter motor today and want to do it the safe way
Where do I put them so as not to damage the car?

I put them in the same spot where the standard jack goes. Just behind the wheel arch. Jack from the tow hook.

I use hoists and jacks all the time and never jack on the double skin. Always on rails cross members and suspension mounting points.
