Ive never had my car at the mechanic because i can do most things myself but parts/labour for these arent that cheap.
Having said that, the only problems ive had with my car are minor things. I've had my fto for 2.5years.

. Roof rust (been removed)
. Rattling windows (easy fix)
. Tappets (getting there  )
. Side mirror motors dont work (meh not important)
. Rear left pad jammed to disk (a clip was missing and caused this)

Buying an fto is like drawing names from a hat.
You could end up with two shittys like silverGPX

Get a machanic to check it out.
If things need replacing you're looking at some decent $$ especially seeing as you wont be doing the work yourself.

SilverGPX has had a really bad run and that has been made obvious before and he has very strong opinions about this. This is not the case with most members. There is always a chance with a car this age that you will get one that has problems irrespective of what you look for. This is the case for any model car. pinkleptir, dont give up just yet. Do your research and come to the conclusion yourself.

Be thankful you guys don't live in Scotland where they salt the roads like 9 months of the year and an old car like the FTO deteriorates faster than it depreciates! lol

In 7 years of ownership I've had one mechanical fault over 100,000 miles (not even kilometres!) If you get a decent* FTO Pinky, it will last you a long time, just take your time and get the one you really want.

*Disclaimer - getting a decent car can come down to luck as much as anything else when buying second hand!

Yup, my '94 GPX, which is 17 years old I know, is worth around £700, or just over a thousand Aussie dollars :(

Learn how to do a minor service, seeing as you'll want to be doing one every 5,000km's. Its pretty easy and saves you from going to a mechanic for something so basic.

That's all you'll need to know for now haha.
If things start breaking there'd most likely be a DIY on how to replace/fix that part.
Then you have to decide whether you have the correct tools and confidence to complete the task haha.
