NEED URGENT HELP!! SNAPPED OFF SCREW THREAD!!

Post by peterm3150 »

Hi all,

I bought some new window guides from Mitsubishi to stop my windows rattling. Took the door trim off, successfully removed the old window guide, as I was doing up the nut on the new guide, I tried to do it up really tight (in order to stop rattling, stupid idea) and it ended up snapping the screw type thing that is attached to the glass (the thread that the nut screws onto).

How would I go about replacing this? Does the whole window need to be replaced? Any idea where I would go (I live in Carnegie, VIC).

In need of urgent help as I don't want to drive my car currently to avoid causing any further problems (ie. window falling to bottom of door and smashing).

Thanks very much.

The way I remove snapped off bolts is from drilling the remaining bolt out, if it's an open thread design, and then retapping.
You can buy an all size thread tapper at any decent hardware store.

Contact a glass cutter/repair place. They will probably be able to sort you out for a couple of bucks.

Oh hang on, after reading Eltnots comment it's made me think twice about what's broken.

Are you talking about the small tabs at the base of the glass like in picture below?

THAT is what's broken off, and the bolt is now only holding a piece of metal with glass being loose?

My window seems to be different to yours Astron-boy.
I have attached photos so hopefully this makes sense.

It is the "bolt" that has snapped in half inside the nut, however it appears as though the "bolt" is actually part of the car (part of the pictured circular piece of metal which seems to be embedded into the glass).

Grap some of those lockwire pliers or one of those clamp pliers and try and twist it out. Failing that u can get the window to go up just guide it as you wind?

OK, that screws in. There are 2 separate parts there. You need a pair of multigrips to get it off. You will need a replacement though. You dont need to replace glass however. I might have a replacement in the shed, but not sure
