Alternator belt & timing belt help!

I need to replay my alternator belt, is it possible to replace this one myself, anyone done it themself before and is it hard? I heard the alternator belt comes in different length so i don't know what or where to get it, any ideas?

Also about timing belt, when the time i got my car off the dealer he told me he put a new timing belt for me, is there a way to check if the belt is still in good condition?

alternator belt is easy to replace... just have to make sure you tension it properl;y when you put it back on.... all it involves is loosening the tensioner pulley by undoing a bolt....

as for the timing belt, you have to remove the plastic covers.... which is a little bit more fiddly...especially on the rear bank.... after you have the covers off, rotate the crank and watch the belt go around... look for signs of wear

how about if i want to reply the timing belt, do i have to take out the whole engine or i could just take some parts out to do it? i'll give this one to the mechanic to do it but just want to know how they do it

the timing belt is more difficult ... you have to take both the power steering/aircon belt and the alternator belt off, then loosen the alternator, take the crank pulley off, take the plastic timing belt covers off the side of the engine... undo the timing belt tensioner pulley and reset the hydraulic tensioner, take the timing belt off and replace....and put it all back together again... i might have missed a few things...

all while making sure that you dont rotate your crank too much to interfere with the valves... i think the 6a12 is an interference engine and theres a chance you can bend your valves if you get the timing wrong...

you dont have to take the engine out... just have to squeeze your arms around that side of the engine... its not exactly the easiest job, but its good experience if you want to learn about your car.... i learnt heaps by doing mine....
