How many belts are there in FTO?

Hello,

A bit of a silly question...None the less I don't know it so...

Timing belt, fan belt, alternator belt etc....
Are they all different? I know timing belt and fan belt are...but what about the others like the drive belt...is that timing belt?

Well what sort of belts are there in the engine bay?

Also, at night time when I turn the lights on I hear an extra noise from the engine bay..I am assuming that it's one of the belt that has worn out...
Would you know what belt it is that I need to replace with this?
As I said, the noise starts when I turn the lights on at night. When I turn the lights off I don't get it any more. Sounds like a worn out belt to you?

Please some help would be great.

Hmmmm, belts I know of are:

Alternator Belt
Accessories Belt (Power Steering and Air Con)
Timing Belt (Internal)

The alternator belt is the smaller of the two belts and the rearmost over the two external belts.

Fans don't actually run on belts, they are electrical fans.

Hmmmm, I've seen a couple of posts about those lights making noises. I'm not sure but can relays get noisy??? I'm not an auto elec and I've only got basic electronic theory in my head =)

i started getting a slight hiss/whine noise fom the dash once i got my EL dials fitted... as i turn the lights on (without the engine running), you can hear a very slight high-pitched hiss... but i've learnt to live with it anyway.

but yeah, i think Eric is right - those are the only belts that I'm aware of...

If the noise is coming from your dash, as opposed to the engine bay, it could well be electrical noise. Have you tried turning your stereo off, as it might be coming through the speakers.

If it is electrical noise from the EL-dials, then it will either be the dials themselves or the wiring (e.g. ground connection). If it is the dials themselves, bugger all you can do about it, if it is the wiring then it could just be a matter of getting a better / cleaner connection.

it could also be a relay about ready to give up.

the fog light switch / relay is notorious for blowing up.

I had some El Cheapo Cold Cathode Neon in my car around my head unit, it requires an inverter to supply power to it (an inverter converts constant 12 volts to AC volts) and the inverter made a high pitched noise, if the EL dials use an inverter (I think they do) then maybe it is the cause of the noise.

going on what MADFTO stated, i guess the other one - accessory belt that has the ppwer steering and aircon on it.

thin belt(back one)=altenator
thick belt(front one)=power steering

I had the same problem. I took the fto to a garage and the bloke just oiled one of the belts ...dunno which one but it was closer to the front right engine bay. After he oiled it, there was no sound at all. He said the belt was dry or sumthin like that.
