Not long enough? It aint thin enough to fit through the holes to reach the nut...it just bumps into the hole? meh, my old man can sort it out when he gets home haha.

yeah a lot of after market rims require a slimline socket in order to remove the nuts

first thing i did when i got the FTO, was remove the wheels and re-install them using a socket and torque wrench which then went straight into the boot. Never use a rattle gun, it wrecks the nuts (cause most impact sockets are damaged), stretches the threads and u can never get em off. If you use a proper torque wrench (even a cheap one will do), you can always get em off. Jumper leads, test light and basic tool kit - spanners, sockets and screwdrivers - should be in everyone's boot!

FKN BS!! Every worshop uses rattle guns. I used one my entire working career when I was a mechanic and they do nothing of sort. TORQUE WRENCH ON WHEEL NUTS

Did you know what these are???

I can show you what rattle guns do to wheel nuts, mine are fucked because of it.

Having said that, getting the 2 semi slicks put on the other day, I was most impressed to see the workshop hand undo them, then torque wrench them back on.

Did you see the pretty little picture I added!! A rattle gun is NOT the problem, its the PEOPLE (Idiots) who use them incorrectly.

Guns dont kill people, people kill people

each to their own. The day you get stuck half way across the nullabor with a flat tyre you can't get off is the day you change your opinions! Yes - that did happen to me. You are right that it isn't the rattle gun it's the user but when far to many users of these rattle guns don't know how to use them .... and as for the torque bars - all well and good except I have NEVER seen them used except hanging up on a wall looking pretty. I actually asked one place why not and got told they are expensive so they'd rather wreck cheap impact sockets than use them! It's the same as mechanical work. I don't mind paying good money for a tradesman but when i find an untrained, unsupervised TA working on my vehicles for the same price as a tradesman, well you work it out... and if you think TA's don't damage things, send me a pm one day and i'll give you a list of some of the carnage done to my vehicles over the last 10 years by poor workmanship.!

i thought it wasnt so much the gun, but that most aftermarket alloys come with alloy nuts and then tyre and workshop places use steel sockets and destroy them

I always rattle up just to it contacts then use torque wrench
You should be able to turn it around 1/4 turn before you reach desired torque ;)

OR use torque socket as Simon pic shows

Its the user not the equipment :!:

the interesting bit is the common thread here about the quality of tradesmen - or the lack of quality as the case may be. Why is this? What happened to the Master/Apprentice system where the aim was to train the apprentice to be better than you are? Our education system is a complete failure - how can someone work on a car with a technical manual when they basically failed school and have trouble reading and writing - so they become a tradie! "I don't need to go to school, im gonnna work on cars!"
Add that to the abuse of drugs in the workplace, a few cones for breakfast, smoko, lunch and tea an it's no wonder the quality of workmanship is so bad. But of course - I know nothing, just a stupid consumer who expects a person i'm paying to do a job for me to do it properly and with all due care, not drunk, stoned, rushed, half hearted or without the required tools and knowledge.
BTW - I know this does not apply to everyone - but with the current rate of drug abuse and illiteracy in our society it applies to a lot of people and is getting worse. - Oh - remember workshops also don't want you to observe them working on your car - for insurance purposes and to stop you seeing the butchery that goes on.

it's funny but i was just looking at the picture of the TORQUE bars - what hope do we have when even the manufacturer butchers our language by spelling them "Tork"
