Recommend a mechanic for FTO in Perth

Post by crimson236 »

Hi guys, I've just gotten my FTO. My mechanic said it'll cost nearly 2k to change the brakes, alternator and timing belt. Could anyone recommend me a cheaper, but still decent alternative? Thanks

Grab a quote from RPW .. pretty sure they've got a workshop & are familiar with FTO's..

If you're getting the timing belt done, you should be getting a few other things done as well while they have the engine rocked forward, like;
Water pump, Engine seals, replace any worn / damaged pulleys (normally aircon pulley by that time)& even just get the tappets done as well if they're starting to tick

Also, if you have no service history on the car, then you should also get them to check over all the fluid levels & condition etc - even replacing brake fluid, transmission oil, engine oil coolant etc in the one major service is a good idea cause then you'll know when they've all been done last..

I guess now you're realising why the car was only 6.5k ;)

Be prepared to have to overhaul the suspension bushes / springs & or shocks at some point in the future as well if that hasn't already been done (about 1500)

Sounds like there's quite a lot of work to be done.. I'll prob do the alternator, brakes and servicing first. Budget constraints. Haha will see how it goes from there. :D

if your timing belt is damaged, then it would be top priority - you really don't want it snapping while you're driving or engine re-build will be the least of your worries..

How do u tell if the timing belt requires changing? I've been told the belt was changed at around 80-100k. It's around 142k now.

He said there's no date on the belt, but after I told him that the previous owner serviced it at 80-100k, he said I could go without changing it for abit longer.

It's still with my usual mechanic. So far he has repaired the brakes and did a service for me. The others haven't gotten back to me with a quote for it yet. Prob get him to do the alternator as well if there's still no news. I'll let u know when it's done :D
