$2200 to recondition gearbox?

Post by Hoodlum11 »

Just put my car in to get the gearbox serviced and apparently they found bits of brass, and I think he mentioned metal as well. Anyway, the guy took it for a drive and heard the strange noise I mentioned to them(you can only hear it when driving, not when stopped, and it comes and goes, isn't 100% constant. sounds a bit like a jackhammer), and he reckons the box is just about to blow and will cost $2200 to recondition it? Is this a decent price or ridiculous?

What are the pros and cons of getting this done versus buying a tip box from someone on here and replacing it with my current one?

Well, ive got a 2nd hand 4sp tip box you can have for $300. Nothing wrong with it. Came out of a car ive been wrecking. That will probably end up being a LOT cheaper than getting your existing one rebuilt.

My current one is a 5spd though, and I'm not very mechanically minded but I'm guessing the 1 gear difference would make it imcompatible, is that right?

    No, you're not wrong xj

You sure you have a 5spd?
Or are you sure you have a 95?

    97+ is 5spd auto.

Can't remember wexactly where I read it on here.
But someone had a 5spd, it died, they put a 4spd in, by changing round a few plugs, the ecu, and shafts.

Bit of a fiddle fudge though to do that.

Yep 5sp tip only on the later models (97+). Maybe yours has been replaced before? Or as said above is not a 95 model.

Yeah it's a 95. I'm guessing it must've been replaced before. Wouldn't surprise me actually, when I done a check on the RTA website before I bought it there had been a fair few previous owners.

How is the price they quoted? Would it be hard to find cheaper quotes(without shortcut/dodgy work that's gonna be costly later) elsewhere in Syd?

I don't want to but it does seem like a safer option. If I buy another box from someone that's parting out their car, how do I know I'm not gonna be in this same situation in a few months? A re-co one should last me a few years at least shouldn't it?

Thats steep. I had mine rebuilt plus rearranging plates & installing a LSD, all together was $700. Although I did remove & reinstall the box myself. So call it 3 hours out, 3 hours in @ $80 odd bucks an hour labour, thats $480, plus the $700 = $1180.

Buy a 2nd hand one and while waiting for yours to blow get that one modified; that's overkill really. Grab DStocks one and get a 4 speed tip ECU, bargoon.
