Very Loud Annoying Rattling Sound
Just wondering if anyone has ever had a really loud rattling sound coming from the engine bay?
I've had a brief look and it's definitely not the bonnet stand bracket. The sound only occurs after the car is warmed up and the car is either in Drive or Reverse and only while stationary. So really all I'm thinking is transmission?
So there is no noise while it's in Neutral or when the car is moving. The car appears to be working fine so I haven't been too fussed but it's f*cken embarrassing sitting at the lights when it sounds like you have a jackhammer in operation under your bonnet!
I'd like to have a closer look but I'm not at all keen on getting under the car while it's in gear even with the handbrake up.
Any thoughts?

Whip your bonnet off and see if someone in another car can elan out and try to pinpoint the location. Is it auto? If so I would think perhaps the torque converter

^^^^ that could definitly be the problem. If it is that the sound should be very "tinny"

If it's a manual: handbrake and pop her in gear while revving a bit and riding clutch, keeping car in place and having someone watch for excessive engine movement.I8A4RE wrote:Engine mount
If it's an auto: put her in drive, foot on brake hard, then feather the accelerator while having someone watch for excessive engine movement.

yeah i have the exact same problem, everything you said is EXACTLY how mine sounds, and i do agree that it is a tinny sound, i thought it might be something harmless like the extractor covers, but i would say its defidently harmless, i dont think i suffer from lack of performance on it, and its only at a certain engine frequency rather than rpm, and only when its a certain temperature id say, because you could do the exact same things as you would to hear that sound but not hear it for the day.. the cat problem defidently sounds like it though, but i could hear it around the tranny area, but the sound under the car may resonate under the bonnet aswell

Mine starting making this noise last night, and still did today, except it happens while I'm driving, but it's not constant, it comes and goes.
The jackhammer comparison is spot on. When I got my service done recently they mentioned that my gearbox mount is snapped, could this have anything to do with it?

I haven't had a chance to look under the bonnet yet but I'll do it today. I'll check the cat cover this arvo but I'd be leaning towards engine mount.
Reason I'm thinking that now is the noise only in gear (it's an auto btw) which I believe torque's the engine forward?
I hope I find it though......problem is that I don't have any spare mounts.

Sorry dudes.....not the Cat cover and my head was about 3cm away from it but not the engine mounts either.
The sounds appears to be coming from near/or the area where the driveshafts connect to the tranny box. I also noticed something weird....my wheels still turn freely whilst it's in Park. Would this be related somehow?
