Strange Noise from the Engine

Post by BlackNajik »

I have noticed over the last few days this tick tick tick noise coming from the engine bay while accelerating.
The noise seems to start the ticking mostly around 4k revs and around there while shifting gears.
I left the car standing and revved it till 4k and above where it starts making the ticking sound while with a little bit of pressure applied on the accelerator
It has been happening over the past few days and now the idle has been cutting out as well, when I stop at traffic lights with the clutch in, the revs drops right till near 0 and will rise back to normal idle again..

Please anyone got any ideas or past experiences?? Its got me completely stumped!! Btw its a 97 GPX.

Thanks in advance!

yeh showed it to a mechanic and after a quick listen by him he suggested I look at getting a new engine?!

I figured its not the tappets as sound only appears when accelerating, am I right in assuming that?

Going to take it to another mechanic and possibly leave it with him for a few days to open up and play around with.

Fingers crossed its not an engine swap, but if it is then possibly could be looking at the vr4 engine, anyone know roughly what extra modifications need to be made for it to fit?

yeah that seems like a lot of work and a lot of time..

I had another mechanic look at it and he said the timing belt pulley needs to be replaced and timing belt readjusted, thing is I recently had a water pump and timing belt change, now need to go back on reciepts and check whether the pulley was replaced.

Thanks for you help guys!
