'FT-Slow'

Post by arkoso »

So it's been more than a few times people have told me that FTO's are a slow car ... personally I disagree.

I mean, they don't have the same launch as a bigger engined car or some of the turbo'd japs but they are certainly not slow. Perhaps what I would probably call ... zippy. Through corners, and at speed it is faster than most.

But sometimes I do get the feeling its a bit slow.
I get in my other (work) car (a 2001) Magna, and always think its got a bit of an edge ... at low speeds that is. All the low end torque I guess. Its depressing in a way. :(

My FTO is a GPX, so far unmodified. My old one (also a GPX) was done up a bit, but that always gave me the same impression too.

I just think the FTO looks a lot faster than what it really is. Maybe there is something I don't know? :)

I'd have to agree. Low down torque is shocking - especially with no mods.
But meh, it's sexy, it's got enough power in the mid-rev ranges and being on my first year of driving, I shouldn't be driving anything much more powerful anyway...

Don't take this personally, I just hate that ft-slow phrase...

Anyone who follows the ft-slow mantra needs to learn how to compare oranges with oranges.

Slow compared to what? A 5000rwkw 3.0L Turbocharged skyboatline? That’s fair.

The FTO it is a small engined, naturally aspirated, FWD coupe. There is not really a lot you can directly compare it to with the obvious exception of the Integra Type R and possibly a SSS Pulsar. The Integra is arguably a better car all round, but the FTO has things going for it that the Integra can’t match (looks, affordability) and at the end of the day it is so damn close it’s really a matter of personal opinion (VTEC YO!!!!! yO). The SSS is a good budget package but isn’t really in the same league as either of these in stock form.

Having said that, the FTO is by no means a fast car. But who would expect a 2.0L N/A to be super fast anyway? For a 2.0L engine the amount of power it puts out is very impressive, and the way it delivers power makes for an exhilarating drive if desired. Of course a 3.5L Magna is going to feel a lot more relaxed and responsive in how it drives due to the oodles of torque a bigger capacity engine can allow. However, in the scheme of things a hard revving engine and a nimble chassis can more than account for overall performance if used correctly.

Unfortunately I think you are right, and the aggressive looks of the FTO tend to make people think that the car must be faster than it is.

I think it’s just time people took the FTO for what it is, and not what they think it should be.

ill diasagree and agree to some extent. Stock FTo with no mods its not the most powerful car in the world and VS commowhores eat it up...

However my fto its still N/A and i munch a lot of cars on take off and in second gear. Heck i much a VS commodore, 2006 VZ equip and a 1999 calais. I wont say where but even integra type R's arnt to much of a challenge.

Im very happy with hthe performance of the FTO after you chuck on some mods to it!

First quesiton is do you have AUTO or Manual...Manual IMO iS a lot BETTER than AUTO....

iv got on mine full CAI setup
Full 2.75inch SS exhaust with high flow metal cat and extractors.
Lightend Flywheel
Emanage ulti that has been tuned

PLENTY till i get off my P's
Then illl head for either turboing or the twin turbo brother of the fto the 2jz-gte

Who cares if it is slow by someone elses comparison

let them be the ones to lose there license from stupidity on speed restricted public roads.

I certainly don't drive my magna wagon to pull chicks, but it's not exactly stock under the hood.
Having said that though I will always get asked why I did what I did to a magna.

Just drive the car for the reasons you like it best and who cares what haters say!

Hey Amacha, where did you tune up your emanage eh? And how much did it cost. I've got a emanage blue sitting here for quite a while and I', looking for someone reliable to tune it up.

Noice one. Looks, handling and overall driveability - the three superpowers that I think the FTO hold - hands down the best car i've driven - incl my mate's BMW
