I need a little bit of information on registration transfers, interstate, and vehicle transportation companies. Can anyone recommend a decent company or give me a rough estimate on some of the costs involved? Say if I wanted to transport a car from Melbourne... Or South Australia.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've done a little searching, but I'd like to know about any hidden catches or costs that people may know of.
in terms of getting the car from one state to another you have three options...fly up/drive back, hire a 4wd and car trailer or have it transported. if you're after transported then you have three options - towed on the back of a tow truck, car carrier (open air) or car carrier (concealed) - for reference this is what i have experienced in the past. two separate tow companies wanted to charge me $700 to have a car towed from sydney - canberra (uuhh huh, dreamin!). when i had my AE111 Levin transported from Brisbane to Canberra it cost me $550 on an open air car carrier (Canberra Carways, yes they operate nationwide), the cost for a concealed car carrier was upwards of $800-$1000 in my quotes, i must add that these prices were obtained roughly 2.5 years ago so it's possible they may have gone up or down and open air is more susceptible to damage but it is considerably cheaper.
in terms of registration transfers and the likes, if wherever you are is like the ACT then interstate cars must be inspected and pass an inspection report, and of course you have stamp duty and rego, unregistered will need an unregistered permit for it to be moved around, cant stress the importance of making sure it has a compliance plate, and 10 years or younger will need an identity check..yes i know i've gone through the obvious but it could b different in each state
Check out Queensland transport website for changing rego over. Its pretty straight forward though. You just have to get the car checked (safety cert). It's the exact same process as when you registering a car that has no rego.
The guy i sold my golf r32 to in W.A used TNT they were pretty organised i just drove it and dropped it off , they bring out their checklist and go through the car to make sure that any previous damages were reported so they cover themselves and you will know if there was damage done.
im sure all the well known companies have good insurance. i also know that they won't allow you to have anything loose inside the car (including the boot), like spare parts etc.

If the car already has a current RWC obtained for the sale, will I still need it to be inspected?
Ive used Canberra Carways as well and can recommend them. They were the ones that moved HKSFTO from Melbourne to Canberra. They were easy to deal with, responded quickly to any requests made and did a great job and the price was reasonable ($500).

Yes mate, but also remember i think your allowed six months (could be longer) of driving before it needs to be changed over, as long as it is registered
