Electric FTO beats world record..

Post by koolio1234 »

http://www.electrifyingtimes.com/mitsubishirecord.html

Found this interesting article on an FTO which was converted to electric power. It then went on to set a new world record in travelling 2,142.3 km in one 24hr period. This was back in 1999, suprised they had chosen an fto though.

Previous record was held by a Saturn-EV prototype travelling 1,700km within 24hours.

We wont be getting much 'full-time' electric cars on the roads for a while though, not until the battery manufacturers pull their heads out of their asses.

I had read that a long time ago actually, interesting aye. One thing I didn't see in the article was the average speed they got out of it for those 24 hours. Quick math tells me just under 90 km'hr average. niiice!

Would be very cool if Mitsubishi (once the technology is at the level required to mass produce an electric car) re-released a re-styled FTO for sentimental reasons. After all, FTO's being COTY in Japan for 1994 may be enough to do a semi retro re-release of an old model with new technology ;)

Yes, average speed was reasonable at around 90km/hr. This was back in 1999 though, so if it repeated now in 2009, I'd like to think they could improve on the average speed and duration.

I'd love to see mitsubishi re-release the FTO as a special edition. It would be interesting to see what changes they would do to it. Change displacement? Forced induction? Size? 6-speed? RWD? AWD? The possibilities are just running through my mind.

quite intresting indeed.

I'd hope to see another fto in the future, but i think it will be a drastic change in styling. Like the 300zx to 350z, those were major changes.

Well its a lightweight chassis and quite stable so they had a good platform to begin with. :D

When I said re-releasing the FTO, I meant as an electric nostalgic car :) but yeah, all those additions to the car would be mint :D

The FTO and the Eclipse have very different chassis, the FTO's is closer to a Galant. Check out some of the Eclipse forums from the U S of A and you will see it discussed a lot.
