Manual Transmission Problems - Stuck in first.

Hey guys,

First post here - hoping someone could help.

Was out driving tonight, going around a rather large round about, changed from 2nd to 3rd and the gearbox seems to have slipped in some way. Now, the car is permanently in 1st, (you still have to clutch it in and out of gear) however moving the gearstick does not change gears - it simply slides up and down like it isn't connected to anything. It can move from 3rd down to 4th but that's it, it doesn't seem to engage anything, nor can it move to the sides, even with some force it is stuck in the central column.

I managed to drive it home in 1st with the hazard lights flashing (rather embarrassing

). Other than this it has been a faultless car. It's a 1995 FTO GPX MIVEC model.

Any idea what may have caused this, and any clues as to how it can be fixed? Any help at all would be reeeeally appreciated, I work full time so its hard to call around to car yards and I'm worried about my transportation a little now too ...

Snapped linkage? Or something much more sinister...? lol, just guessing. I'm sure one of the experienced guys on here will be able to help you out

I thought snapped linkage too, but if you can't move it to either side then I'm not sure.

Oh No!!!
i had same problem with my EXA
you can only use 1,3& 5th gear lolz no reverse.
does the gear stick jump out of gear when you release the clutch
mate i had to get a new gearbox...

Got it looked out by a proffessional. Definately a snapped linkage which isnt too hard to fix, just costs a bit, and can take months to get in. Anyone know of an improvised part I can use? Would a Lancer transmission cable perhaps fit the mechanics do you think?

Ohhh I don't know about that one though lol. My guess would be no, as it would most likely be a specific part for that specific transmission, but you would definitely need somewhere more experienced to tell you for sure this time.

If it is a specific part though, there are always FTO's being wrecked, so I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a spare one lying around. I'm sure someone in the club would probably have one.

Haha yeah mate you were spot on good guess.

I'm sure there must be an FTO wrecked in Perth somewhere, but it will be hard to find one ... there goes my Easter weekend lol.

I'll ask in the parts forum if someone has one, I'm sure they will - just a matter of being available in Perth. Isolation is never a good thing.

If anyone else still has any input it is more than welcome.

Which part of the linkage assembly did you snap? A cable or the selector bracket on the back of the gearbox?

Its the cable itself, I havent seen it yet however the guy who is looking after it is going to take it out for more so i can give you a photo later on today or tomorrow.

I've just had to replace a cable as well. Got one from www.panelhouse.com.au for $75 plus postage. Mitsubishi Aus will ask for over $600 & will only sell you a pair of them as they are FTO specific.

Ouch I was quoted $250 cost price however I will look on that website, sounds liek a good deal - just depending on how long postage is going to take.

I just called panelhouse! Sold the only one they had last week. All out of luck there haha ... if anyone else can suggest a good place let me know.
Its a shame panelhouse didnt have any the guy seemed pretty helpful.
