Engine Replacement

Hey, After 6 months of immobility due to a blown head gasket, I've finally mustered enough money to completely replace the engine.

I'm just curious on the actual cost of this, as I'm rather weary of being ripped off.
Unique auto sports offerd anywhere between 6-7k for a new engine or 5-6k(for a 2nd hand one (includes a half cut worth 2.5k) for the job, but I can't help but feel I'll be paying far to much.

Im just curious on the opinions you lot have to offer on pricing or any other possible suggestions as I don't think I'll be able to afford anything over 6k.

Rip off. Ask anyone here, if you hunt around enough, you'll be able to find an excellent condition engine for under $1000 and then have it put in for another 1000 or so.

Ever thought of getting your own hands dirty and doing it yourself? Perhaps some of the members on here can help you out. An afternoon and a few lads and a crate of beers/few pizzas would probably be the go...

Like a DIY day, you will learn a sh*t load too.

That said though, if you need a mechanic to di it for you, find your own engine for about $1000 (don't let the mechanic find it as they will add a healthy % profit to it).

The labour should be relatively cheap. If the car is completely immobile as you say, perhaps disconnect everything first to save an hour or so so they can just drop it out and put the new one in.

The price they quoted you is absurd, you would get an engine conversion for that price including modified mounts and other miscellaneous parts.

I would think 6-8 hours tops, if they charge $90 per hour, that is $540 - $720. Including Tax (our GST is 12.5%) would be about $608 - $810.

Perhaps factor in a timing belt/tensioner kit (damn good idea) for about $300 + labour of 2 hours tops. Add good oil and filter ( ~ $100) at the same time (incl in labour for cambelt) for a total of about $600.

All done, dusted and reliable with a receipt and cover from consumer laws etc (by having it done at an accredited workshop) for about $2400.

Go even further by replacing the alternator ( ~$200 tops) and starter motor ( ~$200 tops). If it is a manual transmission, maybe consider replacing the clutch ($1500 + labour of 2 hours or so with the engine and box already out) and replacing the CV boots etc.

Even further, replace all hoses etc for a few hundy.

That would have you with everything that would need to be done for 100,000 + kms of driving, and trouble free motoring.

With all of that done, you can see that you are getting damn near $6k, but I GUARANTEE that their original quote will include NONE of the extras that I am talking about.

Shop around, find someone who won't talk bullshit to you and you should get a good deal.

Okay that is crap...

Can someone please take UAS down from teh Sydney section as a recommended FTO mechanic.. we keep hearing all these stories with them trying to rip people off like this & charging WAY TOO MUCH for common service issues..

@ Sweet - These guys are right .. it should not cost you that much for a complete engine replacement.

You have a few options:
- Get the head gasket fixed
- Drop a second hand engine in
- Get the engine completely rebuilt

I'd recommend shopping around for quotes .. but as I have posted above.. UAS seem to have been ripping people off recently. so you might be best to steer clear .. talk to Bennoz & find out who his mech is.

Yep, that's fair. If you actually do have the cash to spend (as in $6k+) consider getting what I detailed above done, if you have less, get the cambelt and tensioners + waterpump + alternator done at the same time.

Save yourself some headaches down the track, or just some trouble free motoring You don't want to have to get the engine pulled again to do it all later on.

Thats a crazy price. Ill have a GPX engine in a week or so that ill sell for $550. Just have to make sure all is OK. Or if you are after GR, have one of those too - $400. You just have to find someone to fit it for you

YEha its too expensive. If u are gonna get a mech to do it discuss it with him tat u want to pay in cash. Might be able to skip the GST. Lolz
