Water pump and slave cylinder

Post by nikhan »

Ok my car jus came back from the mech today

Bad news...

1.water pump is leakin and needs to be changed. Since my mech is gonna change the pump i told him to might as well change the timing belt. Quoted me $250 for labour and $80 bucks for the timing belt. Anyone knows how much the damn water pump costs and is there anyting else I should start changing while doing this?

2. Clutch slave cylinder is leaking as well. He reckon that to get a new one should be about $120-130. Is the price alright?

That sounds like a realy good price to me. Make sure you get some kind guarantee at that price.
1. change the timing belt tensioners and idler as well.
2. don't know about that one.
going fast doesn't kill you, it's the sudden stop that does.

do all seals and tensioner and idler while belt is off mate, price will go up but will be cheaper than pulling it apart again when she starts leaking from the seals etc

Hmmm, yeah... but I am a big advocate of 'if it aint broke, dont fix it.'

Dunno if I'd bother with seals unless they're leaking.

Idler & tensioner for sure thou. Think you can get the kit of Ebay that has both the belt & the tensioners for about $250. Water pump is generic, any local auto shop will do you one for anywhere from $80 - $130. Just ask for a HJ Galant one. They're all the same on the 6Axx series engines.

Uhh.. No. He's just charging you sh*tloads for labour and it's like a 10 min job tops.

My seal broke couple of months ago and my mechanic (dad's friend) ordered the part in. Cost him $40 for the part and he didn't charge me for labour, so I just gave him 40. Mechanic wants to charge you 80-90 for labour it seems.

Find out the part number Subbie. I dare say that wouldn't have been an FTO unit he put in... not that its a bad thing, its actually good, I'd like to know what its from so we could all make that saving if need be. Mitsi Aus are asking $400 for a genuine FTO unit...

Its probably off lancer, or is generic.
