Car turns off while driving..

Ok instead of making another thread thought I'd just ask my question here. Will a dying alternator cause a similar problem to a bunged stepper? Reason I ask is bcos I get a faint red battery light sometimes when I'm not accellerating but my car dies at idle quite often. My car also makes a weird noise sometimes right after I turn her off. Definitly not the motor though, sounds more like a pulley.
