alternator? or battery?

hey guys,
last week or so ive noticed my volt meter in my car was reading the voltage a bit low then last night it was going crazy my battery was reading 11v then next minute nearly 16.5. My battery is old but my alternator is freshly reconditioned but i just want to check its most probably the alternator regulator isnt it?

is it possible to buy the part? and replace myself seeing as i know the rest of the alternator should in theory be fine.

it could be the actual gauge as well. Get a mulitmeter and check the voltage reading on the battery.

Could be a bad connection to your voltmeter.
Having said that when running should be at 13.8v which is standard output for the alternator, be interesting to konw where 16.5v was coming from unless faulty voltage reg on alternator as you suspected.

ive decided it has to be voltage regulator cause without the battery connected and the car running this morning it was outputting up to 17.5v. so i just spent the last half hour taking off the alternator and ill be paying a visit to the auto electrician that did the reco tomorrow.

100% the regulator has gone in it, and ive just spoken to the auto sparky again and the new regulator he has got looks exactly the same as his original replacement but has some difference. does anybody know the difference between the regulator in the gr alternator and the regulator in the gpx so i can help the bloke get a move on cause i need my car lol.

GPX version puts out more current from the second set of pins - its to activate the oil solenoids during 'Mivec - Yo' periods of driving.
