Adjusted valves, now won't start

Post by zaskar98 »

Did the valve clearances this morning (front bank only as short of time) as was sounding like a diesel! All done, no dramas, back together :) Now wont start  Turns over fine, fires occasionally but doesn't catch. I presume I've knocked/loosened/damaged something in the ignition circuit - any ideas :?: 95 GPX manual by the way
Also discovered R-type mivec controller, but no head unit controller. Feels like mivec point has been lowered to around 4500rpm. Is it ok just to disconnect the controller ecu from the main ecu?
Thanks,
Simon

As for the mivec controller a simple d/c of it to your ecu won't be a problem but just for good measure might be good to reset your ecu. As for your other dilemma I got no idea there mate.

Thanks, presumed I could just unplug the mivec controller, but just wanted to check :)
Re the other I'll just go through the usual diagnostics re fuel, spark etc and see if I can track it down. Wondering if I've damaged some wiring when folding back the coil connections, or damaged plug leads when moving them out of the way. I imagine it should start if only running on 4 or 5 cylinders, so wonder if I've knocked a whole bank out somehow. At work at the moment so will have to have another go tomorrow morning; hopefully it will be back to life to get me to work Sun afternoon.

I'd be checking the front plugs are connected up to the coil packs correctly & that all the leads are firmly attached to the coil packs... and in the right order too!

Yeah, checked that, all in correct order & powered up, power to injectors also. In desperation tried the RACQ, but they had no luck either after about 1.5hrs. It keeps flooding and occasionally coughing back through the airfilter. I'm still entitled to a tow upto 50k (good old ultra cover) so looking at taking it in somewhere. Was considering Joe & Rick's down at the Gold Coast which is within my cover from home, but see there have lately been a couple of concerns about them also. Any other suggestions on where to take it or are they still the best bet, I'm on southside of Brisbane :?:
Cheers,
Simon

Fixed & getting it back from APC tomorrow :D Intake cam on front bank had slipped by a couple of teeth & as that is the one with the position sensor on it had thrown whole engine out - new Gates belt, tensioner etc.
They did a compression test while they had it & discovered middle cylinder on rear bank compression is down to 100psi (all rest between 150 - 160), also fair bit of leakage, so ? burnt exhaust valve or sticking/damaged rings
There's always something else

At least your main problems fixed there mate. How much did it all work out to be?? How many km's has your car done?? I'm seriously starting to ponder the build quality of the 6a12 mivec :(

Don't know til I pick it up tomorrow, done 114k (allegedly!!), on original belt so overdue for change, bit early for valve or ring damage though 8O
Was tested with engine cold, will repeat hot when all back together & running, so always possible that ring gaps just lined up or bit of crap stuck on valve and/or seat which could shift when runnning. I'll find out when I have a chat to Eddy when I pick it up. Will be pissed if it is wear, especially as it's on probably the most awkward cylinder it could be and really relatively low k's (if genuine).

Well, got the car back from APC this morning :D Front inlet cam had slipped by 4 teeth. Damage was $1500 8O, but half of that is parts including new Gates timing belt, tensioner, plugs, rocker box seals, plug seals etc. Must admit it runs much better now. 65% leakage and only 100 psi on No. 3 cylinder. Will test it again next service with engine hot & see how we go from there. Certainly seems to pull fine. They also removed mivec controller and harness, now clearly switching over at about 5500, but still big change in noise at 4500, but i presume that's the pod.

Damn, good to see you're back on the road at least. To me that sounds a little expensive but someone else would know more. And yeah, loud roar starts at 4500rpm with mine too and I've got a pod slapped on so that's all normal.

To be fair to APC, when they tried to check cam timing, found that car had thrown a belt at some time in the past and had scrubbed marks off bottom pulley so had to pull all belts and bottom pulley off to time it up manually & then re-fit. Not exactly a whole heap of room down there so obviously just added to time taken & labour charge passed on which is fair enough. I was just a bit miffed that they hung onto the car for 2 weeks; they'd fitted a turbo to a mate's MX5 in the same timeframe :!:
I'd be happy to use them again, would just book in in advance.
