I never listen to the radio so I'd like to ditch the aerial...
I figure it'll improve looks (sleek no ugly aerial), aerodynamics (see 'looks') & I should gain Kw from the weight reduction!
Seriously... Has anyone done this? I'm not sure how to go about it!

Removing it is one thing but what are you going to do with the hole that is left behind? The pre-96 model had an internal aerial, which runs along the back window amongst the heating elements. Gives shite reception though!
Ive actually installed one on on my car (as previously mentioned, the read window aerial is crap) - didnt have one before. Just take the lining out (plugs) from the left side, and the left side of the rear lining. There are 2 or 3 nuts to remove. The top of the aerial also has a threaded part that screws off. The aerial can then be removed through the boot.
Plugging the hole will be the hardest part. Oh, and be carefult removing through from the boot. It is a tight fit, but dont force it, it will leave a crease in your duco.
Another note here. If you are looking at putting an aerial in (if you have the internal rear window aerial), you need the aerial (of course) PLUS the loom that runs across the rear parcel shelf and the switch on the dash (for half height). You also need the plug that the switch plugs into (the plug for this switch does not exist unless you have the outside aerial).
The FTO does NOT come with all wiring and adding the options that you dont have often requires wiring as well as the components themselves. I know this is the case for the aerial and the rear wiper and would not be surprised if it applies to pretty much everything else too.
Hole left over from the aerial will be filled, same as I've just done after removing the rear wing (what can I say - I'm a spolier-less convert!) Fill the hole, sand, prime, touch up! I'm not worried about it being a show finsih as I'm getting the car resprayed when the body kit (thank you Group Buy) is fitted!

Aerial out... Hole filled... Looks much better without that ugly little silver bump! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! She's looking all sleek & sexy now... No wing... Clear side indicators... Aerial removed... Now to get my arse into gear and get the M3 mirrors on...

All external aerial are optional when you purchase the FTO in Japan, it was listed as an option in the catalogue & it does give you a much better reception then the internal one, so i guess thats why most FTO have it, as the original owner would rather have better reception then smoother look. Don't forget in Japan they got a dedicated radio station for traffic, and if you been to Japan, you know how important it is to have that.
As far as look goes, all external aerial are identical between all models.

i know this is an old thread, i did a search, yes yes thats right i managed to use the search option before i just posted somehting up, yay me lol
um... when i pulled my interior penals off (they are still off ), i noticed an aerial looking thingo sitting in the room between the rear outside panel and inside panel, behind the driver side.
is that my aerial? i'm assuming that it was put in for the dvd head unit that came with the car when i bought it, can anyone confirm that for me?
...i guess i can just test it, by unplugging it then try the radio, but it's attatched to a bunch of wires etc... and i have a history of being able to pull things apart then not being able to put it back together...
