Disc Machining

Post by Dr_Jones »

Hi all, need to change my front pads on my GTO quite soon as the shriek of the wear indicator is getting a bit old. Getting new pads on Friday. What's everyones thoughts on getting the discs machined? I have no shudder or anything like that and I've changed pads on other cars before without doing this and had no problems.

I will most likely change em myself but out of interest I went to two workshops today and both said I should get them machined.

Opinions please?

Greatest scam in automotive history and sh*ts me to my back teeth. All mechanics will tell you its the law and has to be done with every change. Thats crap, while the law states it should be done, its not manditory - garages just want your money. C*nts.

If you have no shudder, then a couple of grooves in a disc is fine. The pads will wear into the grooves & eventually you end up more braking surface area on the disc!

before my last brake pad change I had no shuddering .. didn't bother to machine the discs & then I *did* have shuddering..

'tis not necessarily bothering me since I need to replace the rotors anyway.. i just recommend that you get some slotted discs, might cost you about the same as some places will charge for machining anyways..
