Swapping a power steering pump

Post by Bennoz »

Here's a job you can jam up your a*s :x

Swapped on today & its a sh*t of a job!!

Entailed a number of fun things including pulling the radiator out & draining the coolant, removing the belts (alt & air con) draining the power steering system (which has no real drain point) & then pulling the pulley out from a real tight spot. Reassembly was the same but with a ps fluid bleed. Mechanic can have that one next time! Mind you its very nice not to hear the squeak & crunch coming from a collapsed power steering pump pulley!

EDIT: oh & thanks Dwayne for the pump, worked a treat ;)

Once everything is reassembled, fill the resevior up to the very top, jack the car up (so both front wheels are off the ground) and slowly turn the steering wheel from left to right full locks. You should see bubbles coming up in the resevior & the level will drop. Once there's no more bubbles & the level stops dropping, fill it up again & repeat, this time with the car on & the pump running. You migh hear the odd groan as you do it now, thats air being forced throught the pump. Do this until no more bubbles come into the resevior & again the fluid level stops dropping. Finally, repeat again this time with the cars wheels on the ground - this way its putting max load on the pump & it'll squeeze the last of the air out.

I also recommend wedging your finger into the resevior & turning it 90 odd degree & pulling. This will pull out the filter in the resevior - just check there's no crap in it. Do this before the bleed.
