Exhaust

Post by harry90 »

Well it was a couple of weeks ago and my exhaust was sounding louder than usual ! ( no i wasnt hearing things)...so i parked it and started revving to see if this would fix it (the car was also shaking like it was about to stop)...so after revving my mate saw all these black marks on the wall behind me ( i was in a garage) ...it was as if the exhaust blackened the wall ? any ideas what this could be....this is the first time the car has felt like this...none the less...i hope it happens again..cos it was sooo loud...and it was from the exhaust ! :?

so you want to know how to fix it? or just what is causing it so you can make it permanent?

black smoke normally means running rich, as for exhaust being louder, you might have popped an exhaust gaket? or maybe its related to running rich?

i dont think i popped anything, cos the next morning the car was running like normal...as in the exhaust runs now like it normall would before this happened.

running rich is when a car is putting too much fuel into the cylinders, being inproportionate to the amount of air entering the engine. black smoke is a byproduct of running rich or overfuelling, like blue smoke comes from burning oil. Check the small things first, like fuses, o2 sensor and maf sensor (whatever your car has on the intake). Bad o2 sensor can cause this.

Could also be a leak in the exhaust...

If there is a leak before the O2 sensor, air can enter the exhaust system. The sensor will read more oxygen being present in the exhaust than what is actually passing through the engine. The ECU compensates for this by adding more fuel, which causes the car to run rich...

Strange that it stopped though.

i honestly dont think it has anything to do with sensors etc...the fact that it happened once and never again seems to show nothing is wrong at the moment. But the one thing i think this could be from was cos the engine was still cold and hadnt run for about a day...and as soon as i started the engine i basically floored it down the street....i guess that could explain the shaking ?

well..cold as in the needle was on cold ! yea...but i just drive afte turning the car on...i dont bother warming up...it has no problems with being cold and not running well...

but i think what you said might have solved my problem...cos that was the first time i really floored it basically as soon as i started the car...so that could explain it...cos it hasnt happened ever since, cos i have not floored it ever since without the car being driven for a bit..

Your car should run same cold or hot...

However it greatly increases the amount of wear...

i.e. flog it from cold everytime... lucky to see 120k from the engine...

Drive it nice when cold then flog it as much as you like... say hello to well over 200k
