A boxed pod will help increase performance if done right. An unboxed pod is a bit of a waste anyway.
If the pod is just sitting in the engine bay it'll just suck hot air into your engine.
Engine bay air temperatures can get to 70 degrees plus...
Cold air= more power.
That's why people pay good money for cold air intakes.
If you run a pipe from your front bumper to a box housing your pod, your engine is breathing cooler air which is better for developing more power.
You will also have the benefit that this air is "rammed" into the pipe and box by the speed of the car moving through air. This creates (slightly) more air pressure in the box which helps the whole system breathe better.
The stock system already has a cold air feed, it's just a horrible design for flow, as is the stock intake pipe from the air filter box to the throttle body. The idea is you want as shorter length as possible and a nice smooth path for the air to flow through...
This isn't short or smooth...
While your on your restricted license, your best bet to stay legal is to get yourself a good quality filter pad to go in your standard box. I know that K&N make one to fit FTO's...
I doubt any copper is going to check your filter pad.
You won't get the nice induction noise of a pod (Sounds soooo sweet when MIVEC kicks in) and don't expect your car to turn into a dragster, but it'll help your engine breathe a little better.
Would also help to ditch the stock cold air intake and just run a flexible pipe from the bottom of your stock air filter box straight to the front bumper. You can pick them up from most auto accessory shops, just measure the size of the fitting on the bottom of the filter box.
On the exhaust thing, I'd just play dumb and say it was on there when you got the car.
It coulda been imported with the exhaust on there, or a previous owner coulda fitted it.
Most coppers won't give you trouble as long as you treat them with respect.
If your doing something stupid to attract their attention, you deserve what you get....
If they just pull you over to check you out, answer all their questions, be friendly and most of the time they won't give you much trouble.
Mouth off and you'll give them a reason to book you for everything they can.
