Very Poorly FTO- help needed

Post by DannyUK »

Hi Guys

I have a 95 GPX MIVEC that took a major turn for the worse yesterday. My cars done just over 160,000 kms, I've had it a year and its been trouble free until now. I keep it well serviced using genuine Mitsi parts and Mobil 1 0w 40s which is the recommended spec for FTOs running in the UK. Over the last couple of days the car has been running a little fluffy, almost feeling like it was about to run out of fuel (with plenty in I hasten to add). Yesterday morning as I pulled of the motorway it cut out when i stopped at the exit junction, it started immediately I tried it, however, every time I stopped after that, it cut out again. Last night on the way home it did exactly the same thing when I pulled off the motorway again, however when I restarted it there was a really bad clatter from the top end of the engine, after the clatter the car carried on running but was very rattly, like all the tappets had instantly gone WAY out of adjustment. I checked the oil, which was admittedly a bit low (took about 1.5 litres to get to top mark). When I restarted it initially it sounded better, but as it got warmer it became worse again, also I have an ITG induction kit fitted which makes a very distinct change in engine tone when the MIVEC kicks in, now it still makes the noise but there is no increase in power as there normally would be, it now pulls from 6000 to 8000rpm VERY slowly and is well well down on power, also after venturing into the MIVEC band the car rattles more, runs very rough, juddering and cuts out. Today I have driven to work without using the motorway, it feels relatively normal if you keep the revs below 6000rpm albeit with an intermittent rattle and it still cut out occasionally, however MIVEC is clearly not operating properly, there is no increase in power and the performance is well down. Can anyone tell me what I've broken and just how dead my car really is!

There's potential for a thread about anything on FTO Australia

'Search' is an amazing tool :)

Just about to do this myself. Not as complicated as it might seem at first.
