Welcome to the Club!
You've come to the right place
There is a bit of a run down on what to look for when buying an FTO, here;
http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... pic&t=8085
And FAQ's;
http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... pic&t=9204
If you've got any other questions after reading those & can't find them by searching the forums, feel free to ask away..
Also, is $15k your overall budget? You'll have to take into consideration things like getting the car checked mechanically before you buy, Rego (unless it already has it) insurance, stamp duty, possibly a few other things as well might be mentioned in the "What to look for when buying an FTO" thread.
Beware of the very cheap FTO's, make sure to inspect them thoroughly & not get too attached to any car before you buy

hard question - a dealer is going to charge more (as they have to make a profit) - but you may also get some sort of limited warranty thrown in from some dealers.....(for what it's worth)
Don't know about other states - but if you're in NSW, do a REVS search. If you buy privately make sure that the person doesn't owe any money and that the vehicle isn't encumbered.
Also - not knowing how old you are - check out insurance as well and shop around - prices vary crazily. When I renewed mine - the quotes ranged from $1k to $4.5K - same car/same driver
Good Luck and let us know what vehicles you find
Cheers and Welcome
Tanya
ps - Buy a black one - they're the best!!! (yes I have a black one)
