Random Tip Question
Just for general use with a auto/tip gearbox...
Is it bad if you are reversing and you flick your car into drive while its still traveling backwards? 5, maybe 10kph?
Is it better to put your car into neutral while waiting at the lights or does that not make much of a difference?
If racing from a still start, would you rev at all and does anyone know what gears are strongest? lower/higher?
Random thoughts of does it make a difference, should I be doing that.

Best way I know to launch an auto is to apply brakes (either left foot on brake or handbrake), bring up the revvs (mine sits on about 2.5k) then floor it the rest of the way while taking the brakes off.StraydoG wrote:If racing from a still start, would you rev at all and does anyone know what gears are strongest? lower/higher?
NOTE: do not keep the revvs raised with brakes on for long, it heats up trans fluid and you'll end up cooking something.
For gears: what do you mean by strongest? Is it a 4 or 5 spd tip?

I can admit ive been driving along a few times at around 60 and 70 and gone to change gears only to realise i wasnt in + or - but in drive and its gone to reverse for a about a second before i can shift it out, its not a good sound to be hearing.StraydoG wrote:Just for general use with a auto/tip gearbox...

Also went from drive to park a around 5kph that was also a pretty bad sound.
Engine doesnt run as well after doing such things takes weeks for it to recover.
So i would say yes its a bad thing doing it backwars i wouldnt try it

There should be stopper to prevent it from shifting past neutral into reverse unless the button is pressed. Either check the adjustment for the button or make sure your not pressin it when you shift!
In tip mode it only needs the slightest nudge to change. Keep that in mind.

If you use 2 small (jeweller style) flat head screwdrivers you can lever the button out of the top of the shifter (Be careful, scratches and dents are permanent). You can then adjust the height of the plastic bit on the end of the thread.
Try playing around with that (can't help you too much with adjusting stock one, didn't try that) but I'd say your button is pressing down a little too much.
There was a DIY on on how to remove the auto shifter knob with pics at www.funky-fto.co.uk, but looks like they're charging now.

I have a manual but one time when i was going into my old work's carpark and it's a steep slope to get up, and the car was rolling back and i put it in first gear too late and i heard this loud crunching noise and it was so bad.. like i was probably going like 2 kms or sumthin but it sounded realy bad, but it was just a grinding noise, if i heard a "CLOnK" i would have knocked something out.
and i could not even imagine how something didnt blow up when u were driving and threw it in reverse

I hope it doesn't cause too much damage... I was changin' it up in teh Tip' a couple of days ago, and it accidentally slipped up into neutral, only for a split second before i realised and flicked it back into drive, but now i don't think the LED for the 'D' works (if it ever did) - the little square that surrounds the letter for when you're in 'drive'

Definitely not good for your torque converter. Once I was really tired on the way home at a ridiculous hour and wasn't really paying attention going around a roundabout at a proper speed, accidentally shifted to N (after thinking I was in tip mode) car revved to 7500rpm then quickly shifted back to D (after being startled) and bye bye torque converter.StraydoG wrote:Just for general use with a auto/tip gearbox...

I once saw a taxi that was driving down the spreet at about 15km/h and suddenly changed to Reverse because he missed the street he was going to turn down, the entire drive shaft broke and was dragging along the ground.
I didnt think it would ever be that bed, but it was the funniest/most fucked up thing i have ever seen happen to a car!!!
As for a starting launch, if you want to be quicker, launching from maybe 2k revs in 1st should give you a nice start, dont push it too far or you will start doing permanent damage!

well if u r just mucking around with a friend then u'll only end up using 1st and 2nd gear (2nd gear will get u to 100km+) anyway so no point in finding out which gear accelerates the fastest lol (besides the lower the gear the fast anyway, since the power band for an fto is right at the top end anyway).
basically if u were to... say... race around for a whole night with randoms on the street + highway non stop (assuming u r at least sensible enough to only go to the speed limit or just over), u'll never get out of 2nd gear
and dont change in the auto mode while the car is moving, unless it's to N, and then wait till your car is stopped before changing gears. i did it just before coming home, was tired and for some reason when i changed gears with my right hand (was holding a drink in the left), from R i decided to change up

well i dont think putting it in nuetral is going to do anything bad to it. since when your changing from 2nd to 3rd gear, the car goes into neutral anyway while its shifting from one gear to another, so basically there is never anything wrong with putting it into neutral, ever.mr-charisma wrote:I hope it doesn't cause too much damage... i thought when u put it into N while the car (automatic) is moving at high speed is bad cos the time it takes the car to figure out which gear its supposed to go... or somehting like that
could be completely wrong though lol
