Is my FTO a GX or not?

Post by ellusion »

I have a 1998 FTO GX. From what i've read, the GX is a sports edition and has everything a GPX has minus the mivec engine.

However, i do not have side skirts at all! I also have GR rims rather than the GPX 16"rims.

Is my car realli a GX? It has the version R spoiler so i'm guessing that was put on as an option.

Check your chassis number.

Nah, that decoder website never works :evil:

Check your chassis number Ellusion.
The last 4 letters should read something like this:
HNXM if it's a 5-speed manual GX
HYXM if it's a 5-speed auto GX

The 3rd letter X denotes that it's a GX. The 4th letter M denotes that it has a 6A12 DOHC V6 with Electonic fuel injection engine (without MIVEC).
The 2nd letter denotes whether it's a manual or automatic.

The description for a GX states that it has 16X6.5in aluminium wheels (like the GPX). I don't think the version R spoiler is standard.

Just had a look and found out that the GX sports package AERO series comes with a version R spoiler. But wheels are obviously 16X6.5

I remember vaguely there was a GR Sports Package model as well. Not sure what year this ran out of Production. But your chasis number should tell you your model for sure.

What do you mean by no side-skirts? Any pics? The FTO standard side skirts is just that - standard. Nothing flash.

The GX is the GR with the looks of the GPX. In other words it's a GR with a Sports Package. The GX Aero is even fancier.

^^

I dont understand how that can be correct because I have a GS with all the trimmings, came with 16's, spoiler, full interior etc, and its the 1.8 litre engine...

I never thought there was actually a model called "GX", I was under the impression you could just order a GS or GR for instance with all the trimmings.

My GS still has a standard GS chassis number too.

maybe I am confused. ignore if im wrong.

I just checked the chassis and my car is indeed a GX.

However, i do have 15" wheels, not the ordinary ones u see on GPX. Its weird though. Models 97+ either have the GPX 16" wheels or these yucky looking 15" wheels that look like a cover rather than rims. I actually have the wheels that came on 94-97 GR's......

About the side skirt... can u guys actually pull off your side skirt? Coz i don't think i have side skirts...as in the bit under the door is actually part of the body.

GS = 1.8L 16 valve engine
GR = 2.0L V6 DOHC 24 valve engine (non-MIVEC)
GX = 2.0L V6 DOHC 24 valve engine (non-MIVEC) with GPX trimmings
GX AERO = GX plus a few extras (ie MOMO steering wheel, GPvR spoiler)
GPX = 2.0L V6 DOHC 24 valve MIVEC engine
GPvR = GPX with larger spoiler, front LSD, front/rear struts etc
GPvR AERO = GPvR with extra features
