Winton 12/05/18 Report

Another great day at Winton, weather was looking sketchy, forecast at the start of the week was 5-30mm of rain! Thankfully come Saturday we were blessed with blue skies all day, much better than the 35C last time. Below is a bit of a breakdown of my results, if you have any questions let me know.

Class: lowest again despite me saying I was expecting ~1:48, no faith in the FTO it seems  As expected was near the top and even lapped some cars. Felt good coz the dudes in the foresters (boosted) talked sh*t about being in a class with NA cars...

Felt a lot better and less nervous going in to this one. Started to figure out gearing more & more each session and I think the car still has more in it, maybe not the tyres though. I still prefer the PS4s over the RE003s but I think semi slicks will be on the cards next time, I think I've hit the limit of street tyres.

An excellent time on RE003s though, I watched a lot of videos and read a lot of threads from previous runs at Winton with RE003s and not many could crack 1:48 in significantly faster cars than the old FTO. A lot of people seemed impressed with my times and had a chat which was good considering the usual flack the FTO cops. The toe out in the rear made a world of difference, couldn't believe how much more planted the rear end felt in hard corners, a lot less oversteer for sure. A few people mentioned I should try add some toe in at the front so I will need to give that a go next time.

I should have put in a new seat after complaining last time but alas here I am complaining again! 100% need a new seat before the next track day...

The day ran smoothly with only one MX5 blowing a head gasket, a type R binning it in to the wall and some oil needing to be cleared off track.

Session 5 I was having a ripper lap but the car in front of me (turbo 180sx w/semis) gave up on the final corner and there was no way of getting around him, such is the nature of time attack I guess.

Here are some pics:

Felt pretty spesh having a car port with my name on it. My partner ran a 1:48 in his swift sport with semis, he won't hear the end of it!

Seen too many get awesome lap times reliably.

Unsure what I truly want to do but the opportunity to buy quite a nice ED hatch shell has come up. B or K series and you have a very reliable and fun racecar, cannot be denied :P

Boost is certainly tempting though, off my Ps next month... May get a boosted daily and retire the FTO to the shed at my Dad's :( Doesn't make a good daily and gutting it out and making it a proper racecar isn't very enticing, not sure how much more abuse the 6A12 is gonna cop, or the gearbox  Either way I am not getting rid of it!

Nice work.

How was the handling overall?
I don't think front toe in is a good idea especially on a track car.
It'll cause poorer turn in but greater straight line stability.

The car must still have heaps left in it IMHO.
A friend does 1:46.X at Winton in a CE 18 Lancer Coupe that just has cheap coilovers and exhaust.

Shame about the Type R. How bad was the damage?

Pretty bad, motor might be fucked, rad support pushed in most the way to the motor and then huge scrape down the side, was driver error. One of the Elusive Racing cars I believe.

It is tempting to properly gut it or at least give it a go on semis before making up my mind on what to do with it. I think a low 1:40 or even in the 30s is definitely possible on semis.

Interesting a lot of my Honda mates think toe in will help but I really liked how it handled now so I may just leave it, car felt so planted and turn in was good. I could drive more aggressively for sure just lost faith in the tyres.

We have one but we always forget! I will have to get some next day. Yep AD08s are on the cards and a second set of wheels for track.

AD08s aint cheap. Try the Khumo KU36s. That's what I run, comparable performance for less than 2/3s the price.

That said, if you got a track set of rims, don't f**k around with semis, get slicks.

I think I will still run semis as most the events I am going to go to will have people running semis and I like being able to compete on an equal level. I'm sure slicks are super expensive too...

Are KU36 a proper semi slick? Look more akin to an RE003.

Interesting, reading other forums people seem to think AD08/ RSRRRs / R888s are a step above 36s but Ill look in to it.

I will likely end up just getting a used set as they go cheap every now and then and I don't get out to track that often.

They are, but the 36s are a step above the re003s.

R888s are the business

My friend got the 1:44 in his accord euro with R888s which was pretty impressive, it is tuned with a heap of suspension mods though...

Should give the RSRRs a go since they're relatively cheap. They held up with Vectose's 200+ kw the last time I rode in it.

Back when I was doing plenty of track time in the FTO, I just couldn't afford the high end semis.

I went through just about every entry/mid level semi on the market at the time.

Hankook RS2s, Khumo KU 31s & KU36s, Federal 595s, Falken RT615s, Nitto NT05s. Second favourite were probably the Hankooks.

The new federal 595 RSRR are grippier than the original RSR's.

Noisy as f**k though.

Yeah they didn't exist back then.

Track only wheels wouldn't be an issue, I find the re003 real noisy though compared to PS4s.

I use Nankgang AR1s on my car for the track but have nothing to compare them to.

Next I will go R888R and after that most likely A050.
I run 15" wheels and I know the A050s are grippier but the R888R comes in 225/45/15 whereas the Advans will need to be 205/50/15.
Not sure which will ultimately grip better though.

As for slicks I believe they heat cycle really poorly hence even for track wheels their usable lifespan is just too cost prohibitive
