I think I will be able to improve the quality with the kinect slightly on smaller objects but not enough for engineering (which I was hoping to be able to do).
There are a few more professional 3D scanners on the market but they cost a few thousand

I've tried 123D catch but didn't get great results - I didn't spend much time on it though so will give it another go.
