Ok, i took it out for a spin this morning for at least 30 minutes before giving it a real REV :D.

I still found that on first gear it doesn't go past 6000ish RPM! (rev limiter)

I did a bit of research and people mainly mention the car needs to be warmed up, but i ran it for 30 minutes driving on a warm day! That should be plenty.

Another article i read mentioned something about the ECU.. but i am not too familiar with it.

Any suggestions? I would love to hit 8000rpm just once :(

EDIT: when i bought the car, on the test drive i hit over 6000rpm quite a few times with no issue, just never been able to do it since!

Had a full service 12,000km ago changing timing belt and alternator

Thats probably your problem. If they used a GR alternator (2-pin) apparently people have problems hitting mivec.
Did you own the car while this was performed?

Not i didn't, on the test drive i hit 8000rpm comfortably and he never mentioned any problem and never heard about it (called the previous owner up today).

Hmm, i was thinking of checking the error code, can low engine oil do it too? It's top up time shortly.

Is there any way i can tell what type of alternator i have without taking it to a shop?

Not sure. If it was hitting mivec with the current alternator then Its probably fine i guess.
I'm sure Low engine oil could effect it, i'm not 100% sure but one time after i changed my oil i was having problems for 20minutes then it sorted it self out so i dunno if it was like the oil pressure or what but yeah.
Either way i wouldn't be starving your engine of oil

Goodluck.

Also check your volt meter (Gauge in the middle next to the clock) If it sits

under 12v then its a faulty alternator preventing it from going over 6000rpm.

Unlikely if they replaced the alternator though, but do you know if it was

replaced with a new one, rebuilt,or a 2nd hand dodgy one.

Volt meter is reading approximately 13.7-13.8

I'm looking at the receipt, they replaced it 6 months ago with an "Alternator Japanese If Type - Hitachi/Mitsubishi/Mando $ -253.64" <--- direct from receipt.

In drive it changes way before 6000rpm.

All the testing I've done was in TIP, 1st gear.

Ok

do the error codes first if nothing comes up then disconect the battery for

10 mins. Then take it for a drive, the tip box will then learn your driving habits

again and maybe if you give it a little thrash then the box will recognise this

and alter your shift points.Hope that makes sense if this doesnt work then i

have no clue

Still waiting on my mate to come around, but in the meantime i took it for another drive and noticed this light was on. (Picture not from my car, took it from another thread after searching)

Image

The thread goes on to say it could be oil or brake fluid. (my brake fluid is high, but my oil is closing in on minimum).

Could this be a reason mivec is not initiating, or would it work even if it was low? Don't have any oil handy and it's a sunday :(

Are you talking about the light on the right? That's the handbrake light.

EDIT: It can also indicate that the brake pads need replacing.

Check the lid & fluid level in your brake master cylinder.

Ok i ran the diagnostic test

Diagnostic code 64 = Alternator FR terminal

Would this mean its the wrong alternator 100%? Or could it just be poor wiring etc.

I have a receipt they bought the alternator 6 months ago! Was almost $500 including labour.

When we were taking off the bottom to run the diagnostic test, my mate noticed the fuse box on the right was missing 1 fuse. Seemed like quite a standard fuse.. I wonder what that means... :D.

Do you suggest taking the car to a mechanic? or an auto electrician?

Would they be able to tell if it is the wrong alternator OR dodgy wiring without taking it apart?

Cheers for the help guys... looking forward to hearing mivec :D

Click on this to see which fuse it is
http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=15276

Also look at the fuse box under the bonnet, fuse 16, alternator, fuse 80a.

You mentioned it reved too 8000rpm on the test drive so its the correct

alternator.Take it to a auto eletrician they can probably fix it without taking

it apart.

Ok i checked the fuses out, the in car fuses seem OK.

The engine fusebox doesnt have number 11 (ABS).

This seems relatively serious lol.
