Tiptronic Question

Post by scanley »

Not sure if this is correct?
Manual mode - upshift and downshift is smooth and direct.
Auto mode - upshifts are smooth and normal but downshifts seem strange.
It drops from 4th to 3rd even 2nd at times on throttle kickdown but on gradual slowdown drops from 4th to 3rd then hangs onto third until you have stopped completely then it drops to 1st, it just ignores 2nd unless you have forced it into 2nd on kickdown.

any ideas?

I had this exact same question when i first got my car.

Turns out it's the norm, albeit weird as it is.

It's weird - only way to resolve this is to never drive in full auto mode.

I bought it for auto (so i can sell it to my learner friend when she passes) but i never use full auto, im always in tip. She loves it too. Which is massive bonus as im changing to a manual asap again.

The only time I use full auto is when I am sipping on double cafe moccachito lol

Going down a hill in auto mode mine will drop from 4th to 3rd if i pick up too much speed. I always assumed it was engine braking to stop you rolling too fast/out of control.

Always thought it was abit pointless though considering there is a brake pedal :?

Its a learning gearbox. Reset your ECU, then flog it around the way you would like it to drive, it will then attempt to mimic your style.

Otherwise, by default it will try to slow you down on the hills.

i also noticed today in tip mode, if you forget - or just plain can't be bothered changing down it will do it for you as well. Pretty tricky and sophisticated for a 15 year old car, even the corvette doesn't have that feature!
All in all it's begining to spank the vette in a number of areas - there is only 1 thing so far that lets it down - NO CRUISE CONTROL - WTF - why not?

Just buy an aftermarket cruise control kit. They're cheap & reliable these days :)

How do you reset your ECU? Do you drive in tiptronic to get it to learn or automatic?
