Cusco are helical.. did you mean Torsen?

I was gonna write in a previous post Cusco MZ are the hardcore ones.. makes it a bit hard for daily driving, but the RS ones are a little softer - absorbs the initial torque in springs.

What sort of power are you talkin about ben? They have been used on 400hp motors doing launches on full slicks at the drags and no problems

These sorts of problems lol

You see, when you fill up a diff centre with all these wonderful clutch pates & springs & what-not, the available space left for ciritical components such as planetary gears, gets very small.....

I'd have more faith in a stock FTO diff taking 400hp, than I would a Cusco. Have you seen the planetary gears in a stockie? They're the size of cup cakes & the cross pin is as thick as a thumb.. compared to the above pics ^^

I am probably getting things confused.
I thought helical = torsen?
Or is it helical = viscous or something?

Either which way the LSD I have locks on throttle. It is a bit annoying because if you're turning a corner (even driving normally) if you press throttle it will take a wider turn as the wheels lock and turn tighter when coasting. The diff also makes clicking noise at parking lot speeds.
To be honest it came with a Cyborg RS gearbox I put into my car (better ratios than FTO) and at the time I bought it I knew it had an LSD but I thought it was just a standard one.

Yeah you need a high hp diff... wonder what they use in 1000hp evos etc

Is that your daily driver spetz?

Nah, we'll see it on here on a regular basis - sitting on the bench that is LOL

SG, no the car is not a daily driver and hence I may leave it as is.
The car actually hasn't been driven in 4 years now...

They're having trouble sourcing the right factory helical, they only came out in 25 spline (26.6mm shaft dia) where as I need the 27 spline (28.5mm) fittings.

So if I can get one at the right price, I may yet go Quaife...escpecially if I've got a mate coming home from the UK that can pop one in his suitcase.

Every shop I go to tell they're the best & the quietest...

Now Quaife don't actually list FTO as a supplied model, so I've been going through their schematic drawings of all their Mitsi diffs with one of their tech guys. We seem to think we've found the one we want. From the 2wd turbo Eclipse.

Ok, Factory Ralliart helical now out of the question @ $2500 a pop 8O

But, the plot has thickened! The above listed 27 spline Quaife is the very same Quaife that fits into a 3rd Gen Magna!

Now I've just visted the Magna boys website & theya're all buying a a different diff again, a Wavetrac. See: http://www.wavetrac.net/technical.htm

So now I've got more homework to do LOL. The Wavetrac one reckons it can deal with the zero torque issue, which is quite relevant to me having such thick swaybars & chassis bracing. Its also substantially cheaper than the Quaife.... especially coming out of the US rather than the UK. Exchange rate is still good enough to keep it under a grand (save me having to pay GST & Import duty on it.)

Holy good one!

What kind of effort is involved in putting a diff in btw?

Aren't the FTO differentials the same as some of the Evo front differentials, which would make it easy to source an LSD?

The 25 spline ones are yes, but im not going backwards in driveshaft size.

Well Goldy, I can get the box out & open on my bench in 3 hours now  About the same, maybe a little longer to get it back in

Aren't any evo boxes with '2' in the F5m42 27 spline?

Diff is finally in transit  (Well as soon as Hurricane Irene leaves the east coast of the states alone!)

As confirmed, it is the same as a 3rd Gen Magna diff. So I got on the band wagon where those guys are buying.

Its a Wavetrac diff, a US product that is listed for a 3rd Gen Eclipse 00-05. Part number 76.309.180WK.

Cost was $1025 delivered. The actual cost of the diff was $895 US, so it sneaks through customs without import duty & GST (as it's under a grand.)

If anyones interested in buying one: http://www.buyimportperformance.com/Wav ... .180wk.htm

Beneifts of this design:
- Its helical, therefore uses ordinary gearbox oil, no need to f**k about with LSD oil & friction modifiers
- Its quiet, also polite form what Im told. No neck snapping clunking while trying to do a 3 point turn
- Deals with zero torque (ie if one wheel leaves the road, it keeps power to the wheel on the ground)
- The warranty also covers track use. BONUS.
- Its cheaper than a Quaife!

That sounds really good Bennoz but I would like to see how it would deal with that one wheel off the ground. It sounds too good to be true.

Make sure to give us a complete review on it!
Hope it works well for you :)

So of what I could tell it will be more or less an open diff until there is too big off a difference in speed between the 2 wheels?

Make sure you give a review of how it works. When do you expect to receive it, install and test it?
