how much to lower your car

Post by Chiangstar »

hey all
will lowering the front of your car more than the back of your car stuff up the weight balance of the car? if you lower it more in the front you'll have more weight in the front....thats probly good for dragging but is it good for cornering and general ... spirited ... driving?

I haven't noticed any adverse affects (I have Apexi springs lowered -40mm front, -15mm rear), it certainly gives the car a more balanced look and my car handles very well (KYB shocks, IMO you need to change the shocks along with springs to gain any benefits especially for the long term), and logic tells me big names like Apexi and kg/mm would not produce the springs for the FTO to lower the front more than the rear if there was adverse affects of doing this.

Can anyone else add to this?

no it just depends on your budget i guess, personally i would wait til i can afford shocks.

look at it this way, your stock shocks are gonna die one day soon (depending how old you car is, or how many km it has done) and you will have to pay for the labour again to put new shocks in later. so why not just do it all in one go?

of course there is the benefits of improvment in handling (and not feeling like your in a boat rather than a car in the case where the springs were not matched up properly) but if you plan on not keeping your car long or you just interested in lowering for the looks then yeah go for it. It will still improve your handling... until your shocks go bad... just dont cut the springs!

if you want something cheap and local, king and whiteline are 2 reputable brands for springs. Japanese brands tend to be more expensive but saves hassles of getting the correct length and springs rate etc to end up with the ride height you want. thats why you need to take it somewhere who know the ins and outs of suspension.

standard shocks (depending on how harsh you are to them) probably last about 40,000km... good shocks like koni/kyb have known to last 80,000km.

just make sure you goto someone who specialises in suspension and preferably has done FTOs before.

I have a set of koni shocks and springs and another set of kg/mm (Japanese) springs for sale if youre interested.

ive heard that if you want to lower your car any more than 1.5" to 2" then your standard shocks will have to be replaced or theyll wear out super quick.....my car has done 70,000kms and i took my shocks out the other day and they still seemed to be fine.....im not entirely sure if they are stock though....they look old enough to be :P

I have posted in the parts for sale forum so check out the details there for pricing etc.

the springs i have for sale lower the front more than the back since the front has more of a gap to start with, this gives the car a more balanced look.

dont forget that they will charge you labour to install it (typically about $200), and probably a good idea to do a wheel alignment at the same time.

advise i have heard is to also get the bushes checked at the same time, and you might as well replace them if they are bad while youre at it.

why dont you ask them and get a definitive answer?

or you could get the kg/mm springs from me and goto powerplay imports who ive been to before mention me and the silver fto and they could probably fit it for $200 or less.

but yeah if youre keen on the whitelines, i know steve (the moderator) has fitted them from UAS and he seems quite happy with his handling. then again he has front and rear struts as well and lower sway bars all round. dont ya steve?
